Pleasant Valley Literary and Debate Society Cindy Lee Gettle has in her possession a composition book with the minutes of the Pleasant Valley Literary and Debate Society from 1912. The composition book is in poor condition as the pages were damaged when someone laminated some of the pages. The book belonged to her great grandmother, Flora Mae Williams Reedy. She has generously donated her transcription of the book. ************** ? represent words that I can not make out. Pleasant Valley Debating Society
Jan 19, 1912 for
the purpose of electing officers. House called to order by Ben Fairless
after which the following officers were elected. Febuary 16, 1912 Pleasant Valley
Debate Society met Friday night Feb 2, 1912. with a large number
of members present. The society was also well pleased to see so many
visitors. Membership was offered to any one who might wish to join
the society and four new member were enrolled. The program was successfully
carried out. The journal was real in good, different members of the
society sending them in. The subject resolved that women should have
equal rights with men. Good talks were made on both sides. The judge
sent in their decisions in favor of the affirmative. The subject for
the next debate was chosen and the debaters were appointed by the president.
The critics report was of the critics absence. No business matters
to come before the house motion + second was made to adjourn, society
to meet again Friday night, Febuary 16, 1912 March 15, 1912 Pleasant Valley Literary and Debate Society
met March 1, 1912 with a large number of members present. Also was
pleased to see such nice jolly crowd present. Membership was offered
to any one who wanted to join the happy band afterward receiving
8 new members. The journalist report was not heard because of her absents.
The critics passed menny nice compliments on the program and made
a nice talk to the boys. No father business to tend to the motion was
made and seconded to adjourn. The society to meet again March 15,
1912.
