Scudder Cemetery Graford, TX by W. Ira Scudder March 1973 "About two and one half miles Southwest of Graford there is a small cemetery containing five graves. This is located in the Northeast corner of J. R. Calvin's "Will Moon" place. This place was owned by Sam Horton before Will Moon bought it. At the time the cemetery was established the place was owned by John Shadle, probably a brother of a former Weatherford, TX attorney, Sam Shadle. This little cemetery is located just off the old public road that was in use at that time. Today a Brazos Electric Line goes right over it. The graves are located between poles - A1-12-6 and A1-12-7. All the graves are marked with field stones with no inscription. There are still a few cedar post (apparently the original) around the graves, indicating that it was fenced at one time. The stones for three of the graves are so spaced as to indicate they were adults, the other two are infant size. The grave with the inscribed head stone is that of a first cousin of mine. The first grand child of George T. and Kittie Scudder. The marker is of Italian white marble with a lamb figurine on top. It reads: Roy G. Scudder - son of W. I and D. B. Scudder Born Aug. 31, 1894 Died Aug. 17, 1895 Our darling one has gone before to greet us on the blissful shore. The baby's father was William Ira Scudder, the oldest child of George and Kittie Scudder, also an uncle of mine for whom I was named. He and his wife, Dora Belle are both deceased. However, a brother of this baby lives in Lubbock. He is Kirby L. Scudder. Also four sisters live in Austin and Raymondville, TX. Mr. Henry Sikes told me that most of the very few families around here in that day had settled in the Grassy Ridge area, near this cemetery. Only one child of George and Kittie Scudder survives. She is Mrs. E. B. (Mag) Green, who is 90 years old. I went to her for information about the other graves. She told me the people here at that time expected this little cemetery as the start of the regular community cemetery. However, as more people moved in they settled toward the east and eventually began to use the Beavers Cemetery located on Keechi - near the Graford cemetery. Mrs. green was 12 years old when her nephew, Roy Sudder, died. She said he was the first burial at this location. According to her, one of the other graves is that of Grandpa Powell (father of John Powell). Another is the grave of Garry Davis, brother-in-law of Sam I. Birdwell, also of Mrs. Charlie Scudder. Mrs. Green stated that a baby of John Birdwell was once buried there but was later removed. That leaves one adult and one infant unidentified."
