James W. Boyd Obituary

(Contributed by Reba Parks)

Pioneers and Veterans from The Garrison News
PIONEER CITIZEN OF NACOGDOCHES COUNTY DIES

James W. Boyd was born July 26, 1855,

in Carroll County, Ga., being 76 years of

age at the time of his death, May 24, 1931.

Moving to the State of Alabama was mar-

ried to Josephine Richards, Dec. 9, 1878.

Came to Texas his adopted State in 1887

settling near Garrison, Nacogdoches County,

near the place of his death.

To this union ten children were born,

six boys and four girls. Nine of whom

survive him, C.E., E.C., and G.H. Boyd

of Fort Worth, Texas; U.G. Boyd of Houston;

A.H. Boyd of Jourdantown, Mrs. John

Elbert of Houston; Mrs. J.T. Hough of

Nacogdoches; Mrs. W.H. Garrison of

Shreveport, La.; Mrs. J.P. Homes of

Garrison, Texas.

Brother Boyd was converted and joined

the Missionary Baptist Chirch at Mount

Pisgah, thirty-one years ago, and was a

faithful member of the same church until

the death angel called him home. Few

men are more devoted or more loyal to

their church than he, or contended more

earnestly for the faith once for all

delivered to the Saints, than he did. COming

to Texas in an early day he imbibed the

spirit of our forefathers who knew nothing

but faith and devotion to the causes they

espoused, he possessed no spirit of com-

promise, he met the world, the flesh, and

the devil with the unfurled banner, the

sword of God's truth, through and by

which he was victor, even in the midst

of evil days and a wicked and perverse

generation, he had faith in God, that He

would care for his own, he died as he

lived in the triumph of a living faith in

Jesus Christ. And while he has been taken

from us, yet his Christian character and

influence will remain, for the Bible says,

"Blessed are the dead that die in the

Lord, yea saith the spirit they do rest

from their labors and their works do follow

them." Like Abel of old "dead yet he

speaks." Thus another good citizen, lov-

ing companion and devoted father has

passed to his reward.

His funeral was held in Walnut Grove

Church, Nacogdoches COunty, conducted

by the writer, his pastor for several years.

Interment was in Walnut Grove cemetery

in the presence of a large congregation

of sorrowing friends and relatives, the

floral offerings but spoke the love and

appreciation of those who knew him. his

body awaits the resurrection of the just

peace to his ashes. - Elder J. R. Welch

Garrison, Texas
