LOCATION: North on CR 2115
from Highway 49 at Veal Switch for .8 miles. Then right on CR 4114 for .4
mile. Cemetery is on the right and marked.
Although burials predate
this time, it was established as a cemetery by deed in 1875. On November 29,
1875, T A Hargiss and his wife, Martha deeded 564 acres to George C Chambers.
This 564 acres located four miles east of the town of Daingerfield save and
except two (2) acres known as the Old Graveyard to hold and to have together
with all and singular the rights members of Hargiss family. This recorded in
the Morris County Clerks office, Vol A, pages 115 and 116. The oldest grave is
supposed to be that of The Wagon Train Baby buried here between 1848 and 1876
by a family traveling through Texas on Trammels Trace. This according to
Georgia Hensons, The Traces Secrets in Country Faith and Fate, a publication
of Northeast Texas Community College. The Day family began burying here in
1917.
First read by Audrey Rankin
and Lucille Wallace Feb 12, 1996. Updated Feb 18, 1999 by Gerald Hammock and
Charles Steger.
This cemetery is known to
be predominantly white.
This cemetery is listed in
the New Cass County Cemeteries Marietta Section, Vol 6 as Day Cemetery.
