The University of North Texas has completed digitizing the microfilm and various paper copies of Mills County Newspapers. These include The Mountain Eagle, The Mullin Enterprise, and The Goldthwaite Eagle. These may be browsed at The Portal to Texas History. The earliest issue is 1896. |
Mills county was formed from Brown, Comanche, Hamilton, and Lampasas Counties in 1887.The county was named in honor of John T. Mills, a early Judge, who successively held the judgeship of the Third, Seventh, and Eighth Judicial districts. Mills county Court house is located in Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas. According to the Mills County Historical The town was named for Joe G. Goldthwaite, the railroad official who conducted the auction of town lots. In a 1950 issue of the Goldthwaite Eagle, there is a short biography of Grandma Goldthwaite, the Mother of George Goldthwaite who the town was named after. John Cormack won the bid to build the court house in 1889 for the sum of $27,000. The courthouse burned on May 5, 1912 and was rebuilt the following year. Luckily, no county records were lost in the fire. |

A World War II memorial was erected on the Mills County Courthouse Lawn and dedicated on May 29, 2017. It lists by name the county residents who served during WWII and indicates those of them who gave their lives.
