Texas State Historical Marker (erected 1975): Early settlers Johann and Aalke Wiemers let missionaries preach at their home, and the Rev. John Schaper organized (1858) a German Methodist congregation here at Soldaten Kemp, a rendezvous for frontier patrols, freighters and others on the San Antonio-South Texas Road. Villagers in 1871-1872 helped Pastor Jacob Bader, a good stonemason, build this church of flat stones from creek banks and prairies. For years, the settlers only meeting hall, the church was enlarged during 1900-1901 during the pastorate of Rev. C.A. Lehmberg.
