Marguerite Hamilton Gaines, 88 of Conroe, died October 11 in Conroe. She was born April 19, 1892 in Matagorda. Survivors are: daughters, Marguerite Gaines Badgett of Conroe and Ann G. Gulley of San Antonio; son, Carroll M. Gaines Jr. of Houston; 5 grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Monday, October 13 at 1:00 p. m. at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City with the Rev. Don Keeling officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. James Episcopal Church of Conroe or the Genealogy Section Montgomery County Library. Metcalf Funeral Home of Conroe is in charge of arrangements.

J. S. Gillette, 94 Year Old Pioneer Of This County Passes Away Tuesday

Mr. J. S. Gillette, 94 years of age, a life long resident of Matagorda County, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. T. Cox, Tuesday afternoon at 5:20.

Mr. Gillette was born in the town of Matagorda, February 28, 1854. For years he was engaged in the ranching business and on his retirement from that business he moved to Bay City where he has made his home for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mettie Williams Gillette, to whom he had been married for 66 years. He is also survived by three daughters, Mrs. J. Thomas Rosser of Shawnee, Oklahoma; Mrs. W. T. Cox of this county. There are six grandchildren, five great grandchildren also surviving.

Funeral services were held from the Matchett-Newman Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 5 p. m. Interment was in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Funeral Services For Mrs. Mettie Gillette Held In Bay City – Laura Mettie Gillette

Funeral services for Mrs. Mettie Gillette, 92, member of a pioneer Matagorda County family, were held Monday afternoon at the First Christian Church in Bay City. She was the mother of W. S. Gillette of Palacios.

Born on Matagorda Peninsula February 3, 1859, Mrs. Gillette lived all her life in the county. She had been an invalid during the past seven years and had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. W. T. Cox, in Bay City.

Other surviving relatives include two daughters, Mrs. John T. Rosser of Shawnee, Okla., and Mrs. Hugh Gill of Houston and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services for Gladys Pool Hansen will be 11:30 a. m. Tuesday at Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mrs. Hansen, 82, was born Sept. 26, 1907, Bay City, to L. C. and Camilla Estlinbaum.

Survivors include two daughters, Ellen Robinson of Houston and Faye Branch of California; and a son, Louie Pool of California.

Buried in Bay City

Funeral services for Archie Royal Harrison, 78, of Freeport, Texas, a brother of Mrs. A. E. Louderback, were held at 3:00 PM Saturday in the Christian Church of Freeport. Graveside services were held at 5:30 PM in the Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City, Texas.

Mr. Harrison and family lived in Palacios, Texas, in the late ‘20s and was in business with G. H. Faubion. He moved to Freeport and went into the cattle and grocery business, retiring in 1962 due to ill health.


He is survived by his wife, Ellie, of Freeport; son, Lawrence of New Orleans, Louisiana; daughters, Mrs. A. G. Dingle of Brazoria, Texas, Mrs. Fred Reed and Mrs. L. K. DeZavala of Freeport; brothers, Fred of San Antonio, Texas, and Earle of Beaumont, Texas; sisters, Mrs. W. G. Stubbeman of Cuero, Texas, Mrs. A. E. Louderback of Palacios, Mrs. George Reed and Mrs. E. D. MacManus of Florida, and Mrs. W. M. Stacey of Houston, Texas.

Those from Palacios attending the funeral in Bay City were Mesdames Jessie Salsbury, C. C. McDonough, C. W. Nester, Guy Claybourn, and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Clement.

Funeral services for Ellie Ashley Sugg Harrison, 98, of Freeport were scheduled for 1 p. m. today at First Christian Church of Freeport with the Rev. Don Selman officiating. Burial was to follow at 3:30 p. m. today at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Visitation hours were held from 3 to 5 p. m. Sunday at the Freeport-Lakewood Funeral Home.

Mrs. Harrison was born Dec. 24, 1892, in Nacogdoches and died July 19, 1991, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan.

She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Freeport and the Jones Creek Horticulture Club. She had resided in Freeport area since 1943.

Survivors include three daughters, Rachel DeZavala of Freeport, Lucille Dingle of Brazoria and Margaret Reed of Freeport; one son, Lawrence Harrison of New Orleans, La.; two grandchildren, Lynn Waller and Kenneth DeZavala, and five great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Archie Harrison, preceded her in death in 1963.

Pallbearers were Dr. Phillip Crow, Bill Bradshaw, Nat Hickey, Don Moore, Joe Zahradnick and Ray Macune.

Honorary pallbearers were Lynn Waller and Kenneth DeZavala.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Freeport or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are with the Freeport-Lakewood Funeral homes, Freeport.
