Information on this page provided by Tamera Lee

The First Texas Sharpshooter Battalion was organized in Grayson County, Texas, during the spring and summer of 1862. Members of the unit were from Grayson County, Hunt County, and other adjoining counties. The unit saw service on both sides of the Mississippi River during its career. Like most civil war units, the First Texas Sharpshooters Battalion was frequently known by alternate designation derived from the names of its commanding officer. Unofficial names of this type used for this battalion are shown below:

James Burnert's Sharpshooters
R. S. Dullin's Sharpshooters
Wert Smith's Sharpshooters

Shortly after being mustered into Confederate service, the First Texas Sharpshooter Battalion was moved to the Eastern side of the Mississippi River. There it served in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. The Battalion served in that command until the fall of 1863. It then joined the Department of the Gulf. On December 17, 1863, the unit was transported back across the Mississippi River, between Federal Naval Patrols. It served in the Trans-Mississippi Department for the remainder of the War. The unit was mounted in the spring of 1864 and served in that capacity for the remainder of its career. Show below are the specific higher command assignments of the Battalion:
