Our History

A shared passion for the study of family history brought together a small group of local genealogy enthusiasts in 1975. They saw the need for a genealogical organization in this area and established the McAllen Genealogical Society. These members built a very good foundation that brought of the study of family history and its many benefits to the community, including an important collection of genealogy books to the McAllen Memorial Library. This collection is one of the largest in South Texas. Other libraries in Hidalgo County also have received genealogy books donated by McAllen Genealogical Society.

With the population growth of Hidalgo County, the McAllen Genealogical Society Executive Board saw the need to expand this organization and include other cities. So, in 2007 the Society voted to change the name to Hidalgo County Genealogical Society in order to reflect the greater vision and purpose of this organization.
