During World War II several hundred negroes of Henderson County were either drafted or volunteered their services in the United States Army. Three girls of color represented their group as volunteers in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps.
These colored soldiers served not only in every theater of war but in almost every branch of service. Many of these boys served as noncommissioned officers while others were awarded medals for good conduct, sharpshooters and expert riflemen. Several have been awarded the purple heart and one boy made the supreme sacrifice for his country.
