A THIEF SHOT
ATHENS, Tex., March 16. -- Elbert Roberts, a notorious negro horse thief operating in this section for a month past, stole a span of horses from Charles Patton on Sunday. A deputy sheriff and posse pursued him about twenty miles, recovered the horses, and brought the thief back shot through the body. He was found dead in his cell in jail this morning.
