Settled
shortly after the Civil War, the community of Prairiedale eventually had a school and a
church, both located adjacent to the cemetery.
About 1912, several schools in the area were consolidated into one at
the nearby Mayfield community. Then the
Prairiedale church building was moved 1½ miles northwest to become the Mayfield Baptist
Church. Only the Prairiedale Cemetery remains
as a reminder of this early Hill County community.
More
than 85 graves have been identified within the fenced area of Prairiedale Cemetery. The majority of the burials occurred prior to
1912; the earliest noted thus far dating 1877.
Some family burial sites have ornate iron fences surrounding them, and
many fine granite monuments can be found. A
small number of Confederate Veterans and
their widows have been noted.
Most
of the year, vines and underbrush conceal graves sites.
A great many monuments lie overturned and virtually all markers are in need
of resetting and cleaning. Although
attempts may have been made over the years to clean or restore the cemetery, it has
generally been neglected and now stands in poor condition.
An
effort is currently under way to honor the memory of those buried in this historic
cemetery by restoring and preserving it. This
initiative includes identifying additional persons who may have been buried here; locating survivors of decedents; clearing the
grounds; repairing fences; and restoring grave markers;.
Your assistance in this undertaking would be most welcome.
You are invited to request additional information
about decedents listed below, and to lend your support to the cemeterys restoration
by contacting the Prairiedale Cemetery Association, Inc. through [email protected].
