Rockwall Cemetery

Rockwall Cemetery

Rockwall Cemetery is located East of Itasca off of 934E & 4430S.  It is on private property,  fenced and not accessible to the general public.  View Map.
It is not visible from the road, as it is deep within a fenced pasture.  It was overgrown with briars and vegetation for years.  Animals have overturned and broken many of the headstones.  Mr. Mack Ellison has done considerable cleaning and repairs.  There are many graves with a stone, rock, wooden marker, or just the stone base.  Many more graves have nothing to mark them at all.  The cemetery has been vandalized and theft has occurred.  There is a clean-up fund for the Cemetery at the bank in Itasca.

The cemetery was originally called "Hilldale," and was part of a 16 acre tract of land deeded to trustees for a schoolhouse/church building.  The land was given by William and Madora Reavis for the sum of $5 on Aug. 5, 1876.  Their son, Elgin Reavis was buried there in 1887.  The most interesting burial is that of Sames brothers, who were murdered in 1881.  A. Y. Kirkpatrick gives an account of the crime in a book about early life in Hill County.  The name of the community was changed to Rockwall in the 1880's, and the school continued until the 1930's.
