Son of W. C. "Bill" McDaniel and Hattie Mae Jenkins

Wilbur Leo “Mac” McDaniel was born on February 11, 1939 in Haskell, TX, and passed away on May 1, 2011 in Cedar Park, TX. He was 72 years old. He is survived by his wife, Harriett Sproull McDaniel, of Cedar Park, TX.

Mac is survived by three children: Mandy Waldron (husband/William) of Hobbs, NM; Melanie Green (husband/Allen) of Roanoke, TX; & Danny (wife/Diane) McDaniel of Coppell, TX. He is also survived by siblings: Billy McDaniel and his wife Edna of Kerrville, TX; Shirley Beaver of Georgetown, TX; and Mabel Gentry of Elfrida, AZ.

He is survived by 14 grandchildren: Meagan Wright (husband Derek); Brent Green; Danielle Martin; Matthew Martin; Mallory Martin; Cam McDaniel; Gavin McDaniel; TJ McDaniel; Ryan Sproull; Garrett Sproull; Adam Sproull; Lauren Sproull; Brandon Sproull; and Jordan Sproull.

Mac has 6 Great Grandchildren: Emalee Wright; Triston Wright; Brooklyn Garcia; Arianna Garcia; Baylee Garcia; and Madyson Martin

Mac McDaniel graduated from Tivy High School in Kerrville, TX in 1957. He was 1st Team All-State Linebacker for the Tivy Antlers, where he was the captain for his team. Mac went on to serve in the United States Navy for 3 years, from 1957-1960. He played 3 years of football for the Navy Tars as a starting two way player. He was an All-Sea Service player, as well as the MVP for the Red Feather Bowl in 1959. He was the heavyweight boxing champion of the Texas National Guard.

He left the service in 1960, turned down two NFL contract offers, and enrolled at Texas A&I University, where he excelled in football for the Javelinas. He was a two way starter immediately, replacing a consensus All-American at linebacker. Mac worked in the finance business in the Rio Grande Valley throughout the early 1960’s before he made a choice to pursue his passion; high school football in 1968.

Mac was a high school football and track coach throughout the state of Texas, with stints ranging from Pharr, Orange Grove, Banquete, Poteet, Three Rivers, San Antonio Southside, Floresville, Buena Vista, Iraan, Ft. Hancock, Olton, Abernathy, and Prosper. He had a 78% winning record as a head coach in football, basketball, and baseball. He coached numerous AAU Champions and state qualifiers in track, which was a love of his.


He retired from coaching in 1997 in Cedar Park, where he met his wife, Harriett. Mac became passionate about golf, and was an avid golfer, and golf ball hunter! Mac loved the game of football. He loved watching his grandkids play sports. He loved gospel music, and singing.

Mac was a devout Christian, who had a significant impact on his immediate family, his athletes, and to many whom he knew. He was a faithful member of Celebration Church in Georgetown, TX.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at Celebration Church in Georgetown, TX. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville, TX.
