Avalanche-Journal Joyce Nell Wood, 87, of Lubbock passed away Thursday March 12, 2009. Funeral services will take place on Monday, March 16, at 1 p.m. in the Abbey Chapel at Resthaven with Richard White officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home, 5740 W. 19th St., Lubbock, TX 79407. Joyce was born November 13, 1921, to Nell "Sookie" and Haynes Hambleton. She graduated from Haskell High School in 1939 and remained friends with her classmates for the rest of her life. She married her true love, Clifford Eugene "Tex" Wood, on January 25, 1942 shortly before he deployed for WWII. They were married for over 60 years. She had a fulfilling career as a nurse. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, "Aunt Joy," "Mom," mother-in-law, "Gran," and "Great Gran." She was a beloved friend to all who knew her. She was renowned for her sparkling personality, her distinctive laugh, her Sunday dinners, and her incredible sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. E. "Tex" Wood, and daughter, Lou Ann Hicks. She is survived by her son, Gene Wood and wife Judy Wood; grandchildren, Melissa Wood, Laura Kay Sokora, Amy Wood Hayes, Matt Wood Hayes, Russell Wood and Mandy Wood; and great grandchildren, Christopher James Wood and Kathryn Joyce Wood. The family would especially appreciate written memories of Joyce to share and keep. In lieu of flowers, Joyce requested that donations be made to the Mr. and Mrs. Tex Wood memorial fund at Children's Hope, a home for severely abused children, at 1313 W.
