Virgil C. Cobb, 87, passed away in
Haskell, Texas, Wednesday September
14, 2011 at Haskell Memorial
Hospital after a long struggle with
lung cancer. Services will be held
at Cornerstone Fellowship Baptist
Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, September
17, 2011 in Haskell with Pastor
Morris Johnson officiating. Burial
will be at Willow Cemetery under the
direction of Smith Family Funeral
Homes of Haskell. A visitation is
schedule for Friday evening,
September 16 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
at Smith Family Funeral Home.
Virgil was born September 11, 1924,
in Haskell County to Truett and
Myrtle (Wheatley) Cobb. He grew up
in Haskell County and graduated from
Mattson High School in 1942. In
March 1943, Virgil enlisted in the
United States Navy where he served
overseas in Guadalcanal,
Bougainville, New Guinea and the
Philippine Islands. He was
discharged March 9, 1946, at Camp
Wallace Texas.
On July 30, 1950, he married Evelyn
(Linville) Cobb. To this union two
sons were born, Gary C. Cobb and
Robert L. Cobb. During his long
lifetime, Virgil worked for West
Texas Utilities at the Paint Creek
Power Station where he retired in
1987 while holding the position of
Assistant Superintendent. He was
also a charter member and past
president of the Haskell Jaycees,
Haskell Booster Club, and the
American Legion. Virgil was also
very active in the Little League
baseball program during his sons'
early years. He is a member of
Cornerstone Baptist Fellowship
Church where, before his illness, he
loved to serve as greeter.
Virgil is survived by his wife,
Evelyn; his two sons, Gary Cobb and
wife Susan of Lubbock, Dr. Robert
Cobb and wife Shauna of Midland;
four grandchildren, Blake Cobb of
Dallas, Sawyer and Crosby Cobb of
Midland, and Tanner Weil of Atlanta,
Ga. Also surviving are Virgil's
sisters, Joy Chapman of Haskell,
Ernestine Kelling of Moab, Utah,
Wynell Ford and husband John of
Malaga, Wash., and brother, Toxie
Cobb and wife Nancy of Farmington,
N.M.
He is preceded in death by his
parents, Truett and Myrtle Cobb;
sisters, Evelyn Peebles and Fern
Bassing; brothers-in-law, Jack
Chapman, Charles Kelling and Walter
Peebles.
