Scheffel or Grimm Cemetery
Sheffel or Grimm Cemetery

On Property owned by Maurice Wiederstein in 1998
The following was contributed by Dorthy Meyer.

Gottfried Scheffel, born February 8, 1818, emigrated from Molsdorf bei Gera, Friesland, Germany in 1853.  According to various records, he must have come to America on board the Ship Texas with three persons.  I assume these must have included his wife and two children.  He settled in the area of Guadalupe County, Texas, southeast of Marion,  where he engaged in farming.  He and his wife were the parents of seven children:  Bernhart  (1853), Marie (1854), Augusta, aka Agnes (1855) , John, aka Johann (1859), Julius (1860), Elizabeth (1864), and Herman (1868).   They were of the Lutheran faith, attending what is now known as Emanuel Lutheran Church in Seguin,  and later St. John's Lutheran Church in Marion.  Upon  his death, he was buried in the family cemetery, with "G. G. Scheffel" on one of the gates and "M. Fisher" on the other.

Augusta Margraf,  also referred to as Augustine or Justine,  was born April 08, 1830, in Betenhausen, Reus, Germany, and immigrated to America with her husband Gottfried in 1853.  She lived with her son Herman in her last years, dying on
December 01, 1901.  Her burial is also in the Scheffel Cemetery.

Note: This was probably a query to the Guadalupe County Genealogy Society by a Margie.  Dorothy Meyer gave this reply:

Dear Margie,

Since no tombstones were found at the cemetery site, the only records I have are those from Parish Records of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Seguin.  These were all written in the old German Script, so I had to do som translating (and I do not know German!)  Possibly, by further searching, more could be found in the church records:

Gottfried Scheffel: b.  8 Feb 1818    d.  1 Aug 1892
(Wife) Augusta, aka Augustine and Justine, Margraf Scheffel:   b. 8 Apr 1830    d. 1 Dec 1901

Fritz Grimm:  b.  1 Jan 1851 or 2     d.  1 Jan 1897  (husband of Agnes Scheffel who is probably buried there also)

Julius Richard Scheffel:  b.  25 Jan 1891     d.  1893   (son of Herman Scheffel)

Marie Scheffel Fisher (daughter of Gottfried)  was buried there but later moved to Geronimo Cemetery in Seguin with her husband Ernst Fisher and his second wife Marie Hoffman Fisher.

I believe Juluis Sheffel was also buried there but his grave was later moved to Geronimo Cemetery.

I hope this will be of some little help to you.  I'm so glad that you are working to have this cemetery recorded.  It's so sad to have it destroyed and forgotten.
Sincerely
Dorothy
