Old Grimes
County Jail
The third Grimes County Jail, which stood from
1897-1956, is shown here around the turn of the century.
It was constructed by the Dubose Safe Company.
There are no known photos of the first jail, a wooden
structure built in 1853 which measured 15’x24’ or the second jail, a stone
structure built in 1879.

An added porch is visible on the front left side of
the building.
This was the entrance to the private residence provided
for the elected Sheriff.

The fourth Grimes County Jail is
shown here in the 1960s. This jail, over time, had additional cells built
onto the back of it and remained operational until 1998. It was destroyed
by a fire in 1999, while being renovated for use as county offices and storage
space. The building, shown on the left, was the private residence
provided for the elected Sheriff. This structure remained the Sheriff’s
residence until 1988 when it was converted into the Sheriff’s Office.
Today, the building houses the Grimes County District Attorney’s Office.

became operational in December of 1998.
