He was in five battles, Second battle of Manassas , Battle of Antietam , Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chancellorsville and the Battle of Gettysburg. He was wounded and captured at Gettysburg , Pennsylvania , during the battle that raged July 1-3, 1863. He had 8 children: Terzie (1849), Chappel (1854), Wiley August (1859), Samuel Smith (1858), Marry Anna (1861), Mollie (date unknown), Lily Ida (1864) and Marin (1872). Samuel and Lucinda are buried at the Oakland Cemetery in Navasota next to an infant granddaughter Pearl (daughter of Thomas and Lily Cauthen) and Samuel has a confederate marker as his grave stone.
