1850 Gillespie County Census

From the information I could find the Mormons migrated to Gillespie Co. in 1847.  They established their colony about four miles east of Fredericksburg on the Pedernales River.  Their leader was Lyman Wight.  They built homes, a school building, a temple, a water powered saw, grist mill and wood turning lathe.  A flood washed everything away and they left in 1853.

They were going to migrate to Utah and other states.  There is a fenced Mormon Cemetery on Carl Schmidzinsky's farm. As far as I know no one has done a survey of this cemetery.
Some of the names may not be spelled correctly because the handwriting of the census taker was hard to read.  If you know that a name is misspelled please contact me. Donna Schulte Loth

The book is called "Lyman Wight-The Wild Ram Of The Mountain" The description reads as follows:  For any student of Mormon History, this book is an excellent account not only of Lyman Wight and his Zodiac colony which was located near Ft. Martin-Scott.  It is a valuable essay on the development, growth, trials and tribulations and leadership struggles of the early Mormon Church.  A superb historical account.  Order #B-5   $31.25   The book was written by Jermy Benton Wight.
