Notes for EDITH JUNE WOOD:

The original home of this old English family is believed to be in the north of England, specifically, Yorkshire. Prior to the Norman Conquest of 1066. It is, therefore, considered to be of Anglo-Saxon or Danish origin. Parish records indicate that the Wood family held lands during the 13th century at Alonbury near the Yorkshire city of Leeds. During the 16th century the family appears to have spread to many parts of England and to the Scottish Lowlands. The family was well represented amoung the early arrivals on our shore. In Massachusetts, Thomas Wood was living at Rowley in 1634, Henry Wood was found at Concord in 1638. Persons bearing this name can be justly proud of their heritage. They can be found in all parts of our country and are well represented in the arts and professions as well as the world of business.

Soldier Invalid is Home to Visit During Furlough

S/Sgt. David Lloyd George is home on a 21 day furlough after 22 months in the European theatre of operations. Staff Sergeant George went overseas in April, 1943, with the 82nd airborne division and jumped with the 504th parachute division during the invasion of Sicily.

After the conquest of that important island, Sgt. George was invalided back to Africa with yellow jaundice and malaria. After four months of hospitalization he was reclassified from combat duty and reassigned to the 80th station hospital as utility sergeant.

The 80th station hospital went into southern France with invasion forces and set up their unit in the town of Marseilles, France, where George was stationed until he became sick again and was returned to the United States on a hospital ship.

The ship landed at Charlestown, S.C. February 20 and he was flown from there to San Diego where he was sent to Mitchell convalescent hospital, Camp Lockett.

During his tour of overseas duty, Sergeant George was awarded three campaign stars, Sicily, Southern France and Germany campaigns.

His wife arrived from Mobile, Ala. She was formerly Miss Delcia Parker, from Ashville, N. C. They were married two years ago before he went overseas. They are staying with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. George, 212 E. Pasadena street.
