According to "German Settlements in Texas 1831-1861" by Rudolph Leopold Biesele (page 140)
The complete list of the first settlers of Fredericksburg will probably never be ascertained.
In Penniger's 'Fest-Ausgabe' a list of 28 survivors of the first settlers is given,
but it is not at all certain that even this partial list is accurate, since it was made in 1896,
fifty years after the founding of Fredericksburg. The list includes the following names:

William Arheiger, August Arhelger, Daneil Arhelger, Lorenz Schmidt, Fritz Lochte, Heinrich
Lochte, Mrs. Peter bonn, nee Lochte, Heinrich Behrens, John Behrens, Mrs. Carl Schwarz, Sr, nee Behrens,
Heinrich Strackbein, Christian Strackbein, Mrs. John Durst nee Strackbein, Mrs. Steubing nee Strackbein,
Martin Heinemann, Mrs. Anton Novian, nee Heinemann, Adam Klein, John A. Klein, Mrs. Joseph Leyendecker nee Klein,
Mrs. Joseph Jung nee Klein, Heinrich Eckhardt,Jacob Neffendorf, Heinrich Thiele, Mrs. Katharina Schneider,
Wilheim Fritze, Mrs. J.U. Anderegg nee Fritze, Theoder Wiedenfeld, Wilheim Schnautz.

A second reason why it is impossible to ascertain the complete list is that in 1850 the store in which its owner,
John Hunter, then county clerk, kept the county records was completely destroyed by fire, nor is it certain that
ese records even gave a list. The final reason is the fact that most of the records which the Society kept in Texas
have disappeared."

Footnote-Penniger. 'Fest-Ausgabe' 63-64. This list is in error on at least two names, those of Daniel
Arhelger and Lorenz Schmidt. Arhelger had been severly wounded in the right arm by the accidental
discharge of a gun when the surveying expedition was return from the Pedernales and was not allowed to go along with
the first emigrant train by Dr. Theodor Koester, the Society's physician. Lorenz Schmidt also a member of
the surveying expedition, remained in New Braunfels to support his mother.

Those interested in the first settlers of Fred. should see who is listed on the first tax list(s)
for Gillespie County. Liz Hicks, Houston
