HANDBOOK
OF TEXAS ONLINE- TELEPHONE
Telephone is in northeast
Fannin County at the
intersection of FM
273 and 2029. It's about 18
miles northeast of
Bonham. While settlers had
moved into the
vicinity as early as the 1870s, the
community was not established
until around 1886. Telephone was named for the fact that the only
in the area was at
the local general store owned
by Pete Hindman. According
to local lore, postal authorities had refused all of Hindman's applications
for a post office in
his store that would serve the community because the names he submitted
for
it were already being
used by other Texas post offices.
Pete submitted the
name Telephone (perhaps as a
joke, since the postal
authorities had already been
giving him grief about
name selection). The name
was accepted, and the
post office was opened in
1886. In 1890, the
community's population was 30. Today, the population is about 200.
