JAMES CHARLES ROSS

Charlie Ross was the ggrandson of  Rice Farrar Ross (12-3-1776 to 4-8-1856) and  Sarah Bonham (8-5-1787 to 3-29-1849). He was the grandson of William W. Ross (12-5-1815 to about 1865) and Mary Ann Hendrix (3-25-1825 to 7-23-1904). He was the son of Isaac Rice Ross (1851-1943) and Mary Rutha Barton Ross (1850 to 1929). When Charlie registered for the draft he said he was born 12-20-1890) in Wolfe City, Texas. At the time he was a Tenant Farmer in Lone Oak, Texas.  His parents were born in Tennessee. In the 1930 census Charlie was 39 and his wife , Lilly, was 29 and they were living in Live Oak County, Texas..

They were living in the house with, or next door to, Earnest A. Lehmberg (21) and Elsie (19) (married couple). Earnest could have been a brother to Lilly. Charlie Ross was listed as 19 in 1910 census, and was living with Ross family in Hunt County. He was not living with them in 1920 census. Names, ages and places of births vary according to who was taking the census and who gave the information to the census taker.

I do not know when James Charles Ross and Johanna Marie Lilly Lehmberg married. Their daughter, Pearl Louise Ross, was born in Live Oak County 1-18-1932, and died in Fort Worth, Texasin March of 1977. Charles and Lilly were married sometime before the 1930 census.

Charles died October 17, 1970, in Fort Worth, Texas. Lilly was born 7-18-1900 and died in April of 1983, in Fort Worth.

There were other Lehmbergs living in Live Oak County. I do not know which ones were kin to Lilly. One family was: August (55), Lydia (55), Perry S. (15) and Pearl D. (15). These were buried in the Clegg Cemeter in Live Oak County: August Lehmberg (4-16-1874 to 5-11-1957)), Pearl L. (4-10-1914 to 8-10-1931) and Lydia (6-23-1874 to 1—4-1955). This could be her family. In 1920 there was a Johanna Lehmberg (79) living in Bexar County. She had a daughter (26) and a son-in-law (27) living with her. I do not know whether they were kin or not.

Charlie served in the army during World War I. He first trained at Fort Travis, then Fort Sam Houston. He received horseshoeing and medic training. When he got out he was not living with his family in Lone Oak. The 1920 census showed: Isaac 68, Mary Rutha  70, Mary Susan (Susie)  Stinson 46, William Thomas 42, John Allen 32, and Wesley Stinson 12.

The 1930 census showed: Isaac 77, Susan Stinson 55, and William Thomas 47. They were living at Riley Grove Community, near Commerce. Susan died in 1934. When the John Ross family moved from Amarillo in 1931 or 32, these three were the ones living together. When Susan (Susie) died, Isaac Rice moved to live with Charlie and Lilly. Charlie and Lilly lived south of Commerce at the time. William (Will) moved to Savoy, in Fannin County, to live with his cousin James E. Barton and Sarah E. Barton.

Charlie and Lilly moved to Fort Worth, Tarrant  County, but I do not know when. Wilson Ross married Pearl Louise and Arthur David Newton  11-30-1955 in Fort Worth..Wynona

says that Pearl Louise had two sons. Charlie had  a good sense of humor. He liked to tell jokes and stories.

Charlie had three brothers: William, John and Ivy. He had three sisters: Mary (the 1880 census called her Martha) Elizabeth (Mattie) Ross Peak, Mary Susan (Susie) Ross Stinson,  and Charlotte Lenora Ross Bass. All of them  have died.

This is a start on the history of James Charles Ross. We need your help to complete it.
