"Red River Changing Its Bed"
May 24, 1892, Dallas [Tex.] Daily Times Herald,
p. 8.
HONEY GROVE May 24 1892
- "An old citizen of
this place, Mr. Nunnally, who lives on Slongle[?] creek, was
in the city andstated that Red river was rapidly
changing its bed, and the Indian Territory was changing
its domain.During the recent rise and fall of the river, acres
of land were torn from the Texas side of the river
anddeposited in drifts on the
territory side. Old landmarkslike the Bumpas
place and Nesbitt's store have
beenswept into the river and the topography of the
locality changed.
Mr. Nunnally
says that years ago, the river bed was a mile
and a quarter
from its present location and Horseshoelake was a
portion of it, but during a large flood, agreat bend was made in the river
by an accumulation of drift and sand,
and that is now being washed away
and the river will soon reach the lake
and occupy its old bed."
