Mr. James A. Lee, who died
at his home in the Spring Hill Community Wednesday of last wee, was one
of the pioneers of Fannin county and North Texas. He moved to Texas in
1842, stopping first in Lamar County; where he spent one year; then moved
to the community now known as Spring Hill, where he spent his long life.
We are told that he bought a half section of land at 50cents an acre, but
money was very scarce in those days and it required hard work , rigid economy
and many privations for the pioneer to pay for a home even at this low
price.
Mr. Lee is spoken of by his neighbors
as one of the best men they ever knew. Quiet and un-ostentatious , he never
had the slightest trouble with any neighbor, but always delighted to extend
aid to his fellowmen when in his power. A southern gentleman of the
old type of hospitality was unbounded, and any man , acquaintance or stranger,
was always welcome in his home and received every attention possible
to bestow. Mr. Lee is survived by five sons and three daughters, Jno.F.
, of Dodd City, James Henry, William and Hugh; Mrs. J.T. Boswell, of Shawnee
Okla., Mrs. Hulsey of the Bagby community, and Mrs. Bishop Armstrong, of
Oklahoma. Mr. Lee was interred Thursday at the Lee burying ground, near
his home.
