Samuel Burdell Neilson
Samuel Burdell Neilson was born in Buncomb County, North
Carolina. After their home was burned by the yankees during the Civil War,
they moved to Hunt County, Texas. On the way they stopped and spent the
night at the home of Dr.Chapman. The next morning as they perpared to leave,
their host said " that wagon is is heavily loaded. This is a fine boy,
leave him with me and I'll teach him to be a doctor". This began the boys
medical education.
Dr. Chapman took Sammy with him on rounds each day teaching him
anatomy and other medical facts along the way. He later attended the Featherstone
School in Ladonia. When he was ready, he attended Missouri Medical College
in St. Louis. After earning his M.D., at the age of 21, he came back to
King Community and began his practice on a borrowed horse.
He married Laura Elizabeth Little and moved to Ladonia where they
built their home and lived off their land on Bonham St. which still stands
today. The Neilsons were devout Methodists and believed in Education. They
reared six sons of which are 2 lawyers, one dentist, one school teacher,
one doctor, and one accountant.Of their four daughters, one married a doctor,
one became a teacher and married a teacher, and two married lawyers.
