Monkstown is on FM273 about 16 miles northeast
of Bonham
in extreme northeastern Fannin County.The
area was first known
as Blue Prairie and was first settled
in the 1870s, but later
the name was changed to
Monkstown after James
Monks, who donated land for
the settlement. A post
office named Monkstown had

During this time, Monkstown
had fifteen businesses, a

a Masonic lodge. The post office
closed in 1927. Today,
the community population is
about 35 & most
of the land surrounding Monkstown
had reverted to pastureland.
