Randolph (Spl.) -- James Cowling Gist, 77 ,retired farmer and long time
resident of the Randolph community, died at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16,
1956, at his home after a long illness.
   Funeral services were held at the Randolph Baptist church Monday
afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.  The Rev. Tom Hillery, Baptist minister, and the
Rev. Jack McNabb, Methodist pastor, officiated.  Interment was in the
Randolph cemetery with Cooper Funeral home directing.
   Paldbearer (sic) were Ed Johnson, Jess Cotham, Lee Garner, Parnell
Biggerstaff, Albert Langley and Decatur Shelley.
   Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lizzie Deshane Gist, of Randolph, whom he
married in 1911; one sister, Mrs. Maggie Jones of California, and 14 nieces
and nephews.
   A native of Arkansas, Mr. Gist was born Feb. 10, 1879, in Hempture (sic -
should be Hempstead) county.  He came to Texas with his parents when a small
child.  He was a member of the Baptist church.  (Researcher's note:  J.C.'s
wife was Pearl Lizzie DeShane, daughter of William M. DeShane and Mary Ellen Bell.  Lizzie' maternal grandparents were Thomas A. Bell and Mary R. "Nancy"Boone.  Lizzie's great grandparents were Joseph R. Boone and Virginia E.M.Crenshaw.)
