Church of Christ
The Church of Christ began meeting in the
present building in 1927. At that time, the building was owned by the Southern
Presbyterian Church.
The land on which the building stands was a part of
the John Robinson survey. This land was granted by the Govenor of Texas
to F. McCown assignee of John Robinson in 1858. It was deeded to Elijah
Dupree in 1857, then to John Nail in 1862. After the death of John Nail,
it was deeded by his heir, J. W. Nail, to G. E. Eagleton in 1887. In 1890
G. E. Eagleton deeded it to W. N. Mc Cown and J. W. Nail, trustees of the
Presbyterian Church for the sum of one dollar.
In 1941 it was bought by the Ladonia Church of Christ
for the sum of $500.00. At that time the elders of the church Ernest Tolleson
and J. P. Maynor
At the first meeting of The Church of Christ, the
following were present:Lee Hulsey & family, Mr & Mrs Moorehead,
Uke Thompson & family, Mrs Eulalia Sandal, Ed Lackey & family,
and Doss Smith.
There is no record which shows when the building was
constructed. Since it became the property of the Southern Presbyterian
Church in 1890, it is assumed that the building was erected about that
time.
In 1952 the building was completely remodeled. The
tall steeple holding a large bell was removed. two glass rooms and a baptistry
were added. In the early sixties the old opera seats were replaced with
modern pews. In 1981 vinyl siding was added.
"Mr. Edward Parsons led the singing for the
church over a period of 25 years."
