ALLEN'S CHAPEL
(The Post office established there
was Known as the Nicholson Post Office)
This little community was one of the earliest in Fannin county.
It was founded about
1842 by Wilson Bruce
Allen. He was the son of David and
Mary
Bruce Allen. Born in the Edgefild Dist. of SC later the family lived
in Tenn. and then came to Texas in 1838 settling in an area north west
of
Honey Grove.
The first school was organized as early as 1852 with a Mr. Stovall as teacher.
A Methodist Church was founded in 1847 , made
of hewed logs and
split log pews with no
backs were the comforts for the parishioners , who
were Thankful for the
luxury of having a church to go to at all.
Later a Baptish Church also was founded in Allen's Chapel.
Today a Church and cemetery
and a few scattered houses are all that
remain of Allen's Chapel except in the hearts and in family histories.
See list of some
early settlers below.
