Hello, My husband and I are researching his g-grandfather, Robert/Joseph
GOODSON, who married a Martha KUYKENDALL in Hunt CO in 1874. Their only
son, William Leonard GOODSON, was born in 1876. Martha apparently died
soon after. Leonard's obituary and family lore agree on Leonard TX as his
birthplace. However, another document from 1919 shows a different birthplace
C(illegible) Hills. Robert/Joseph returned to Indian Territory as soon
as Wm. Leonard was old enough for him to care for. Leonard died in McAlester,
OK, in 1966.
According to the family lore, Robert/Joseph killed a black colonel
(?) during Reconstruction. Although he was young, between 12 and 16, he
ran to Indian Territory to hide. We don't know which Texas county he was
living in at the time of the shooting, although it was referred to as South
Texas. we are pretty sure that Fannin County is too far north to be the
location of this event.
We are sure that he used the name Robert in IT and Joseph in TX. It
is possible that both are aliases perhaps the GOODSON surname was also
not the original. Some family members think that the original surname was
BURLESON.
We are trying to find any info we can on this little family and hope
that we might find something in Fannin County. We drove through Leonard
a couple of weeks ago and noticed the reference to Wildcat Thicket on the
town square's marker. We thought that perhaps R/J hid out there as well
as Indian Territory. Perhaps he met Martha during this period.
Can you point us to a source that might include stories or some sort
of history of "Wildcat Thicket"? Is there an area near present-day Leonard
with a name similar to C... Hills? The first word in the name appears to
contain 6-9 letters. Are there any documents listing farm hands employed
by the LEONARD heirs? A fellow researcher has confirmed that the 1870 Fannin
County census does not include a Robert or Joseph GOODSON, so that source
isn't helpful.
Any help or pointer that you could give us would be great! We live
in a suburb of Washington DC and can't get to Texas very often.

I am looking for a Samuel H. Adams (S. H.) and his son Smith Samuel
(S. S.). They were on the 1850 census records in Sumner County, TN. However,
there is a S. H. as well as a S. S. Adams in Fannin County, TX in 1860
census records in Honey Grove P.O. Samuel was born about 1801, married
to Sarah P. Hill. They had 8 children as of 1850 as follows: Smith 17,
Richard 13, Johanna 11, Luiza 9, Lucebra 7, Caledonia 5, Arabella 3, and
Malvina 4 months. Both Richard and Smith joined the 35th and 11th Calvary
Regiments in Tyler County, TX around 1862. Smith was killed during the
war, but Richard remained in Texas and is buried in Somervell County along
with two of his sons. I cannot locate this Adams family on the census records
in Sumner County, TN after 1850. It appears maybe the entire family may
have migrated to Texas since both the boys joined up to fight in the Civil
War in Tyler, TX. I don't think they would have traveled all the way to
Texas just to join when they could have joined in TN. Could you tell me
if these Adams might be the same? Can I access Fannin County Census Records
on-line as well as cemetery records? I would greatly appreciate it if you
could help. Thank you so much for your time.

My father, Donald Ray Burchfield was born on his grandparents'farm
outside Honey Grove in 1924. His parents were Issac Burchfield (from Vernon
area) and Donna Lucille Isham (her parents owned or leased the farm). My
great-grandparents, John C. Isham and Laura Elizabeth Stowe were the farmers
in the area. I don't know who Laura's parents were. John was reportedly
the son of Moses Baugh, but since he was born out of wedlock took the last
name of his mother, Martha Isham (Moses was married to Martha's sister,
Nancy). Moses was the son of Levi Baugh. I don't know who Martha Isham's
parents were. I don't even know if any generations lived in Fannin County
before John and Laura started farming there. Laura died young and John
re-married to a widow named Beulah Hendricks (first husband's name, I believe).
Beulah is buried in Bonham, I think I know that's where she lived until
her deathg in the 1970's. Thanks for any info or sources of info you can
point me to on t!
