ROSEBUD, TEXAS

       Rosebud is on State Highway 77 thirty-eight miles south of Waco in southwestern Falls County. It was developed by the Texas Townsite Company in 1889 and was incorporated on November 7, 1905. The original settlement, known as Pool's Crossing or Greer's Horsepen, was on the west bank of Pond Creek. In 1884 Albert G. Tarver established a post office there called Mormon, after a group of Mormons who had settled in the area. The settlement was destroyed by fire in 1887, and Tarver resigned as postmaster. Allin Taylor took up postmaster duties in his home, at a site now in southwestern Rosebud. Taylor wanted to name the post office Mullins to honor a local family known for their beautiful roses, but a Mullins community already existed in Texas, so he named it Rosebud instead; the post office officially became Rosebud on April 23, 1887. This is the front of a postcard postmarked and sent to Susan Virginia (Thorne) Gott from New York on August 27, 1886.

The location was called Mormon before it was named Rosebud. Mrs. S. V. Gott is buried in Woodland Cemetery at Rosebud.

I did not copy the reverse as this card as it was a reminder for a newspaper subscription expiring.

I "think" this is a picture of a Williams / Griffin Family reunion at Powers Chapel Cemetery in early to mid 1940's.

The Williams and Griffins were tied together early on because my grandmother, Mattie James Williams, had a twin sister, Mamie who married O. H. Griffin. Valiantly carrying on the mythical tradition of the decadent south, I married Mamie's grandson (my cousin!!!!) David Griffin.

I do not know any of the younger kids, so if we start counting row 3 the man on the far left in a tie, and holding something in his hand:

This picture postcard of downtown Rosebud, looking eastward, was sent to Miss Annie Z. Marek in Brenham, Texas. The notation at the top of the postcard reads:

"With best wishes to the family and yourself,
I am,
Fannie C."

On the left margin of the postcard is the following:

"Miss Annie, how are you? I received your pretty Easter greeting, thanks very much for same."

Along the right margin of the postcard is the inscription:

"Our store here"

I believe this is referring to the building shown on the far right of the postcard, possibly indicating that the individual sending this postcard is pointing out the location of their business in the photo.
