Father Takes Over For Son In Service

Joseph A. Gibbs, Lt. Col. US Army Retired

William Selby "Bud" Hardin
ca1897

My great-grandfather was William Selby Hardin, but was commonly known (and remembered) as Bud Hardin. He married Aurelia Ellen Sherman, daughter of the Reverand James M. Sherman (Methodist-Episcopal Church), in August, 1896 in Franklin, Texas, Robertson County. They had one child, Violet Webb Hardin (my grandmother), born September 5, 1897 in Williamson County, Texas. Bud is said to have been wounded during service in Cuba with the Rough Riders, but his name does not appear in any known military roster. He died a year or so later from complications of that wound, supposedly at his parent's in Marlin. This would have occurred between 1898 - 1900. His grave site is not known. All information on the Hardin family was lost in a fire in Burnet, Texas in 1967.

According to the very scant information preserved in oral family lore, Bud Hardin's family was a prosperous one. They are said to have lived in a fine in Marlin, which was still standing in the 1950s, possibly on a main road through town. Bud's father was a businessman, based in Marlin, and is believed to have owned a chain of livery related business (saddlery, harness, tack, buggies, wagons, horses) throughout Central Texas. The name of Bud Hardin's father is not recalled by the eldest of my family, just turned 85 in July. Bud Hardin's mother is believed to have been named Elizabeth. There is a chance her maiden name was Webb.

The man standing left of center is Wiley Ephraim Dorman, Jr. of Nacogdoches, 1889-1974. The man standing next to him is one of his brothers, probably Oscar August Dorman, 1893-1967.

Andrew Jackson and Catharine (Collier) Flowers and Family

Andrew Jackson Flowers and wife, Catharine (Collier) Flowers with their family on their way to Texas from Smith Co., Mississippi. This would be around 1853-1855 or so.

They were camping on the banks of the Mississippi. A tornado came along and destroyed a lot of their possessions, turned things over and killed 3 of the slaves. They traveled with 25 slaves. Two older sons are not shown in the picture. They had already gone on ahead to Hallettsville, Texas.

Worth noting is that not among the children pictured is their oldest son, William H., who married Hannah Elizabeth Gillett and are the parents of Mattie Flowers. I would love to know if there is a picture of him out there somewhere.
