Beulah Cemetery

Beulah Cemetery is located on County Road 495B off Texas Highway 7 between Marlin and Lott.

Located in a group of trees on the right side of the road about 75 – 100 feet off the road.  There are some stones you can see from the road but it is very hard.

If you try and go during the late Spring or Summer, you most likely will not see it and miss it.

There are many unidentified and unmarked gravesites in this cemetery, which is no longer used for burials. It is in an overgrown area, which is cleaned occasionally by family members.

From Lott:  Take TX-320 North toward Marlin for approximately 6 miles.  When you see the sign for CR-495, begin slowing down and signal a left turn.  After another 1000 feet to a quarter of a mile you will come to a junction.  FM-2027 will be on the right and CR-495b will be on the left.  There is a standard green highway sign with white lettering on the left side of the road marked "Beulah Cemetery" in case you miss the sign for CR-495b.  Turn left onto CR-495b.  Be careful as the road is only partially paved.  After a hundred feet the road becomes gravel and dirt.  After another hundred feet you will come to the cable barricade shown in the photo provided by Don Wellman.

From Marlin:  Take TX-7 West until you get to the junction with TX-320.  Take TX-320 South until you reach the junction with FM-2027.  FM-2027 will be on your left and CR-495b will be on your right.  There is a green and white highway sign marked "Beulah Cemetery" in case you miss the sign for CR-495b.  Turn right onto CR-495b.  Be careful as the road is only partially paved.  After a hundred feet the road becomes gravel and dirt.  After another hundred feet you will come to the cable barricade shown in the photo provided by Don Wellman.

Park carefully as you will need to make room to turn around when you leave.  About 75 to 100 feet beyond the barricade, on the right side of the road, you will find a path leading up to the cemetery.  It is marked with another green and white sign displaying "Beulah Cemetery".  Be careful as you must cross a small culvert, climb a small incline, and pass through a lot of undergrowth.  I would suggest wearing boots and thick trousers because there is a lot of mesquite, prickly pear cactus, and sticker briars.  Also, you are in a snake paradise.  Take a water bottle, a brush, and some garden snips in order to clear the headstones.  The cemetery is in a shamefully deteriorated and overgrown condition and many stones are hard to find, much less read.  Quite a few are broken or overturned.

Most other cemetery sites for Falls county show a map for what they think is Beulah Cemetery.  They show a site near the intersection of CR-442 and FM-1239.  That is the Hoolia-Beulah Cemetery.  It is not the location of the Beulah Cemetery.

James Franklin Powell was born in Butler, Alabama, and died in Falls Co., Texas

According to the Civil War Pension Application that his widow Mary Elizabeth filled out in 1929, James F. Powell served in the 17th Alabama Infantry, Company C for 2 years but according to the Pension Application also reenlisted into the 22nd Alabama Calvary in 1864 until the end of the war. I believe he is buried in the Beulah Cemetery without a stone because his older brother is buried there.

Horace Green Young info submitted by Ernie Wentrcek

Note:Information I've developed within the past year has revealed that Amanda's husband Horace G Young did not die in Oklahoma.

Handwritten notes left by his second wife - Eliza Moring Elmore - for their youngest daughter state that Horace died 15 November 1907 in Coryell County. His burial site is unknown. She gave that same information as to his death in her 1919 application for an Oklahoma Confederate widow's pension.
Ernie Wentreck is aware of the new evidence.

You might also add to the entry that Horace G and Amanda had four children: Sarah E Young b. 1871 d.1894, John C. Breckinridge Young b. 1875 d.1913, Horace L. Young b. 1870 d. 1954 and Juanita "Neta" Young b. 1880 d. 1957.

Funeral Record above submitted by Bill & Kathy Tye

Carolyn Elizabeth (Collins) Magee was born 21 Jan 1851 in Mississippi and died at 10 AM on 15 Mar 1926.  She was 75 years, 1 month, and 18 days old.  The cause of her death was influenza (contracted 09 Mar 1926) complicated by pneumonia (contracted 10 Mar 1926).  She died at her family residence at 1413 South 7th St., Waco, McLennan Co., Texas.  The property is now a part of the Baylor University campus.  Caroline's maiden name was Collins and her mother's maiden name was May (full name - Mary May).  Both of her parents were born in Mississippi.  Her Death Certificate was witnessed by her granddaughter, Ruby McCreary.  She was embalmed by the Puckett Funeral Parlor, Waco, TX, and her body was interred at Beulah Cemetery on 16 Mar 1926.

Carolyn and her daughter, Lillie Alice (Magee) McCreary, died in the same house, of the same illnesses, one week apart, in Mar 1926.  Both were buried a week apart.  Caroline was buried at Beulah Cemetery and Lillie Alice (Magee) McCreary was buried at Clover Hill Cemetery

Samuel Bullock

Jul 1862

1906

“Age 46 Years”

Samuel Bullock Magee was born in July, 1862 according to the 1880 and 1900 US Federal Censuses.  Though his gravestone notes he was born in 1860, I believe 1862 to be the accurate year.  Samuel was the son of Calvin & Mary Teresa (May) Magee, both from Mississippi and buried at Beulah Cemetery

Samuel Bullock Magee married Lelia H (unknown maiden name, possibly Hazelwood) around 1887, according to the 1900 US Federal Census.  She was born in Mar 1875 in Alabama.  Both of her parents were also from Alabama.  S.B. and Lelia had four children, and all were born in Falls Co.  They were:  Leni Magee (born 08 Jul 1888; died 14 Mar 1914 in Lott; married to William G. Ruble Sr.), Mamie Magee (born Aug 1890; married Robert H Armstrong of Navarro Co, TX), Fletcher Calvin Magee (born 12 Jul 1892; died 20 Jun 1974 in San Antonio), and Donovan H. Magee

Lelia and her daughter Mamie (also spelled Mamye) appear in the 1930 US Federal Census living in Waco, McLennan Co, TX.  Both are widows.  Mamie has a son with her, 20 year old Ensor W. Armstrong, who appeared in the 1910 US Federal Census for Navarro Co, TX as a newborn. He was born in Apr 1910.

In the 1910 census Lelia is stated as being born in 1875, married for 13 years, and bearing her first child in 1888.  This would mean that she was 12 or 13 at her marriage and 13 when Leni was born.  This is possible, but not very probable.  The 1910 and 1930 censuses state what I believe to be her true age (42 and 62, respectively) and true birth year (1868).  This would have made her about 19-20 at her marriage and 20 when she gave birth to Leni.

It is possible that Lelia H Magee was buried under the name Lula Hazelwood Magee (born 09 Mar 1873; died 23 Jan 1937) in the Mart Cemetery in McLennan Co, TX. (TX Death Index, 1903-2000)

Mary Teresa (May)

Aug 29 1829

Jun 29 1914

Mary Teresa (May) Magee was born 29 Aug 1829 in Mississippi and died at 9:45 PM on 29 Jun 1914. She was 84 years and 10 months old.  The cause of her death may have been an overdose of morphine used as an ongoing treatment for a painful hip joint injury that occurred in 1910.  Prior to the date of her death, she was last seen alive on 26 Jun 1914 by Lillie Alice McCreary.  Mary died in Lott, Falls Co., TX.  Her father's name was Etheldred May, from Mississippi.  Her mother's name was Sarah Davidson, birthplace unknown. Her Death Certificate was witnessed by Lillie McCreary.  Her body was interred at Beulah Cemetery.

Wife of Calvin Magee

The Texas Death Index, 1903-2000 and Mary’s death certificate (see above) show that Mary Teresa died 29 Jun 1914 in Falls Co., Texas.  The 1900 US Federal Census shows that Mary was the mother of three children, two of which were still alive in 1900.  I believe that Sally Magee is the child that Mary lost.  Sally died in 1875 at the age of 30.  In 1900 Mary Teresa was living with her son, Wilson N. Magee (born in Mississippi in May, 1846) and his wife Callie (born in Mississippi in Jan, 1851).  I believe that Samuel Bullock Magee was Mary’s third child.
