Beulah Cemetery
Beulah Cemetery is located on County Road 495B off Texas Highway 7 between
Marlin and Lott.
Located in a group of trees on the right side of the road about 75 – 100 feet
off the road.
There are some stones you can see from the road but it is very hard.
If you try and go during the late Spring or Summer, you most likely will not see
it and miss it.
There are
many unidentified and unmarked gravesites in this cemetery, which is no longer
used for burials. It is in an overgrown area, which is cleaned occasionally by
family members.
From Lott: Take TX-320 North toward Marlin for approximately 6 miles.
When you see the sign for CR-495, begin slowing down and signal a left turn.
After another 1000 feet to a quarter of a mile you will come to a junction.
FM-2027 will be on the right and CR-495b will be on the left. There is a
standard green highway sign with white lettering on the left side of the road
marked "Beulah Cemetery" in case you miss the sign for CR-495b. Turn left
onto CR-495b. Be careful as the road is only partially paved. After
a hundred feet the road becomes gravel and dirt. After another hundred
feet you will come to the cable barricade shown in the photo provided by Don
Wellman.
From Marlin: Take TX-7 West until you get to the junction with TX-320.
Take TX-320 South until you reach the junction with FM-2027. FM-2027 will
be on your left and CR-495b will be on your right. There is a green and
white highway sign marked "Beulah Cemetery" in case you miss the sign for
CR-495b. Turn right onto CR-495b. Be careful as the road is only
partially paved. After a hundred feet the road becomes gravel and dirt.
After another hundred feet you will come to the cable barricade shown in the
photo provided by Don Wellman.
Park carefully as you will need to make room to turn around when you leave.
About 75 to 100 feet beyond the barricade, on the right side of the road, you
will find a path leading up to the cemetery. It is marked with another
green and white sign displaying "Beulah Cemetery". Be careful as you must
cross a small culvert, climb a small incline, and pass through a lot of
undergrowth. I would suggest wearing boots and thick trousers because
there is a lot of mesquite, prickly pear cactus, and sticker briars. Also,
you are in a snake paradise. Take a water bottle, a brush, and some garden
snips in order to clear the headstones. The cemetery is in a shamefully
deteriorated and overgrown condition and many stones are hard to find, much less
read. Quite a few are broken or overturned.
Most other cemetery sites for Falls county show a map for what they think is
Beulah Cemetery. They show a site near the intersection of CR-442 and
FM-1239. That is the Hoolia-Beulah Cemetery.
It is not
the location of the Beulah Cemetery.

James Franklin Powell was born in Butler, Alabama, and died in Falls Co.,
Texas
According
to the Civil War Pension Application that his widow Mary Elizabeth filled
out in 1929, James F. Powell served in the 17th Alabama Infantry, Company
C for 2 years but according to the Pension Application also reenlisted
into the 22nd
Alabama Calvary in 1864 until the end of the war. I believe he is buried
in the Beulah Cemetery without a stone because his older brother is buried
there.
