Pioneers of Ellis County Thomas A. Miller Family   Thomas A Miller, son of A. T. Miller and Martha L. Witherspoon, was born on his father's homestead near Waxahachie Jan. 18, 1865. A. T Miller, born in 1830 in Rhea Co. Tenn. was the youngest of three children of Abram and Rebecca DeArmand Miller. Abram Miller was a boot and shoe manufacturer, and a soldier in the Florida Indian War in 1836. He was a long time resident of Chattanooga, Tenn. where he died in 1842 . His wife died three years later. There were three sons: - James C., A. C. and Arton. Arton Miller married Martha L. Witherspoon in 1856 and came to Ellis County three years later. He overcame numerous obstacles while establishing his home but eventually became one of the most prosperous farmers in the county. His homestead was some four miles north of Waxahachie. He served in Co. D. 19th Texas Cavalry during the War, taking part on all campaigns in which his regiment participated. He and his wife had eight children - only three reaching maturity. The youngest, Thomas A. Miller, born Jan. 7, 1865,grew up on his father's farm, and graduated from Add Ran College in Hood County in 1886. He began reading medicine the same year under Drs. Sweatt and Thompson in Waxahachie. He later attended the Medical School at the University of Tennessee in Nashville, graduating in 1888. After a year in clinic work at New Orleans and Nashville, he began practice in Corsicana, Navarro County. He married Amanda Murphy Nov 3, 1889, daughter of Lafayette Murphy of Kaufman County, Texas.
