George W. Martin

George W. Martin was the son of J. S. And Mary C. Martin, natives of Kentucky and Virginia, respectively. His father was a merchant who moved to Missouri at an early day.

There were nine children in the family: Nancy (m. William John, Ellis County farmer); J. D. (moved to Texas 1872); Molly (m. M. Fisher, Bell County, Texas); George (subject of this sketch); Jackson T. (lived Colorado); Alexander and  Jane (both lived Missouri); James (lived Mexico); Sally (m. Hawkins, lived Missouri).

George W. Martin was a young man when he came with his uncle, A. C. Martin, to Texas in 1866, settling in Ellis County. He first worked as a farm hand for $5 - $6 a month, later working for the Central Railroad engineer corps for about three years at better wages. His next venture was farming and raising live stock. He rented property until he bought his own, also adding a tract of timber land.   He had  a large house and barn and all of his property was fenced and in good condition..

In 1873, George Martin married Susan E. Wright, born Nov. 6, 1853, Upshur Co. Tex., a daughter of William and Margaret Wright, early pioneers. William Wright was born Nov. 7, 1797 in Kentucky,  the family moving to Tennessee and later Missouri. i. He moved to East Texas in 1849 and to Ellis County in 1855 where he died Sept. 7, 1890, aged 93 years. The Martin family had six children: William T., (born Mar. 13, 1874), George G. (b. Oct. 11, 1875); Walter L., (b. Oct. 11, 1877) , James W. (b. Jan. 6, 1880); Ida, ( b. July 14, 1882); and Joseph O., (b. Aug. 12, 1886).

Mr. Martin was most successful in all of his business endeavors. He and his wife were members of the Missionary Baptist Church, and he was a Democrat.
