Thomas Finn Garvin

Thomas Finn Garvin was born Sept. 11, 1841 in Newton Co. Mo., son of Benjamin G. Garvin (1800-1853) and Rachel Billingsley (1805-1880). The family moved to Texas in 1847 and Thomas married Mary Ann Rebecca Elizabeth Wolcott 26 May 1864 in Midlothian, Ellis County, Tex. Their children: Francis Minnie, Rachel E., Henry F., Charley Angus, Almira, Bettie A., Hosea, Rhoda A., Fin Jr., Howard and Mollie E. Garvin.

Thomas served in the Civil War with Parson's Brigade, enlisting in Co. F, 12th Regt., Texas Cavalry at Rockett Springs, Tex. in Sept. 1861. He served in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas and the unit surrendered in Galveston, Tex. at the close of the War. He received Confederate pension #42586.

The Garvins lived on the "Garvin Home Place" just east of Midlothian about 3-1/2 miles north of U. S. Hwy. 287. Thomas Finn was baptised on 22 Sept. 1877 by Rev. R. M. White, at the Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ellis County. He later left that church to become a member of the First Baptist Church in Midlothian, Tex.

Thomas was a farmer most of his life. He stood 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighed about 230 pounds. He was blind when he died (1 November 1930), at the home of his daughter, Rhoda Cornelius in Midlothian. Mary Garvin was about 5 feet, five inches tall and weighed about 95 pounds. She died 10 March 1920. Both are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
