Researched  and compiled by Joyce Terrana

Jesse E. Clardy was born ca 1821/23 in Laurence Co. South Carolina, a son of Jesse Ellis Clardy and Rachel South.   The son, Jesse, and/or some of his family lived in Ellis County from the 1870s to the early 1900s and many are buried there.  Jesse died 5 Jan 1887 and is buried in the Waxahachie Cemetery .  is name on his tombstone reads "J. E. Claraday."   A daughter, Mary Clardy Wynn and her husband are buried nearby.

The will of J. E. Clardy, (recorded 22 April 1887,  p. 317, Ellis County Will Book A)  names wife, Margaret Jane Clardy; children: Joseph Clardy, Maggie Clardy, Ellis Clardy, Stacy Clardy and Robert Clardy, Alice Teafatiller, Sarah Follis, Lawrence  [Adella] Boswell and heirs of decd. dau. Mary Wynn (John Wynn to represent them.)

Jesse first married ca 1844 [most probably in Laurens Co. S. C.] one Jane [surname not documented.  It has been said that he married Caroline Puckett.  [Was her name Caroline Jane?] The family is enumerated on the 1850 census with three children: Caroline, William and Jane.

By 1860 Jesse  and family had moved to Hernando Co. Florida. The 1860 census enumerates six children:  Laura, 23 b. SC; Sarah 17, b. SC;  Sarah, 17, b. SC; John 15, b. Fla., Alice, 13 b. Fla; Stacy 11 (male) b. Fla and Chapman (m) 5 b. Fla.  Living next door to Jesse was his recently married daughter ,Mary Clardy Wynn, and not far away was a Boswell family, also from South Carolina.

Caroline Clardy died sometime after 1870 and Jesse's second marriage was to  Mrs. M. [Margaret] E.  Hill 22 Aug 1877 in Ellis Co. Tex. He is listed on the 1880 Ellis Co. census with Margaret and her four children [erroneously listed  with the surname Clardy] .  Joseph C. Clardy, the  last child listed was the only child of Jesse and Margaret.  Margaret is said to have died ca 1922 in McCurtain Co. Okla. and is buried at Idabel, Okla.
