Howard / White League   Howard is located on FM Road 984 about four miles southeast of Lake Waxahachie.  The name was changed from White League in honor of Howard Williams when the post office was established.  Settlement could have occurred as early as the 1880s.  Postal service began July 29, 1896 with John W. Miles as postmaster, followed by Henry C. McCarter Sept. 26, 1896; Thomas M. Bine, April 28, 1906.  It was discontinued Nov. 30, 1906 when the mail went to Waxahachie. Reference:  "HOWARD, TX." The Handbook of Texas Online The White League Baptist Church was organized by Elders Fuque and Daughtery on Sept. 15, 1883, ten years after the Association was organized, with eight members, two joining immediately after by experience and baptism.  This church is in one of the best parts of Ellis County, eight mils west of Ennis, a community of refined and noble people.  They now have ninety odd members, not as strong numerically or financially as they have been in some years past.  They had during these twenty-four years seventeen pastors.  It may be that two often a change accounts for much of the decline in many of our churches. Their pastors have come in the order named, viz. J. S. Daugherty, W. R. Thompson, T. C. Leake, W. R. Thompson, J. W. Bailey, A. D. Cardwell, J. R. Vaughn, McCluhg, F. L. Dupont, W. I. McClung, J. C. Banks, Samuel Bussell and H. P. Tyra, their present pastor.  They have an excellent and commodious church house with seating capacity for 500, worth now at least 4,000. They have had some good and noble men for deacons as any church in the county.  We want to name John Overall, N. F. Woodring and Brother Graves, all now dead, and Brother Daniels and Will Woods, still living. Reference: A. D.
