Reburial Services Held In Spur For Sgt. Wright Hinson
Reburial services for Sgt. Wright D. Hinson, were held in Spur, Friday, June 4th, at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. A.P. Stokes assisted by Rev. J.W. Grizzle officiating.
Sgt. Wright was killed in combat on March 21, 1943 in North Africa, in the battle near the Kasserine Pass. This battle claimed the lives of many American boys. At this time, the few remaining companies left were trying to escape from the Pass and Sgt. Hinson with a group of men the third patrol for the night was helping to carry two wounded men on litters, when the bullet struck him in the shoulder ranging downward inflicting a serious chest wound. The wounded man on the litter was removed and Sgt. Hinson was placed on the litter and carried to a place of shelter. The only remaining two men left in this group escaped to the mountains, and one is living in Lubbock at this time.
Sgt. Hinson served with great valor and distinction, he was decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross, awarded the Purple Heart and received outstanding citations.
He is the son of Charles and Lossie Boone Hinson, was born in Spur, January 20, 1913. He grew up around Spur and was living in the Kalgary community at the time of his enlistment in the Army, in January 1941. In March of 42 he was sent overseas, where he died March of 43.
Survivors include his father and step mother; one brother, Doyle Hinson of Kalgary; four sisters, Mrs. Mollie Davis of Slaton, Mrs. Lossie Self of Lamesa; Mrs. Gladys Germany of Brownfield; and Zona Hinson of Kalgary.
Pallbearers were Jimmie McArthur, Tommie McArthur, W.G. Hinson, Merton Fisher, Elmer Turbyfield and Buck Taylor.
Interment was in the Spur Cemetery, with Campbell Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
