Biography

January 10, 1946, Clifford Olan Daughtry and Laura Elizabeth Westfall were married by Rev. C.N. Gilbert in the study of First Baptist Church in Spur. Olan, the son of J.L. Daughtry, Rule, Texas, and Edna Fletcher of Spur was born February 26, 1927. Olan attended school in Rule and Haskell. Joining the Navy in 1945, he served until August, 1946. We met and started dating in 1947 while working for City Cleaners. When we married our combined salaries were fifty dollars a week. We allowed ourselves ten dollars a week for groceries. This was a lot of money to us and we managed to save some. In December of 1948 we bought Jayton Cleaners and moved. Soon we decided that we could not make a living in Jayton so moved back to Spur. Olan worked at Spur Laundry. He helped build the Rural Telephone line, then in November 1952 started work for Mac´s Supermarket. In 1955 he was made manager where he remained until January 1964. We then purchased the Western Auto Store and continued there until October 1981. Olan was a member of Spur Lions Club, serving two terms as president, zone chairman 1972-73 and guiding lion for Dickens Lions Club. He worked for many years with children in Spur baseball league and Dickens County Livestock Show. He served as president for Spur Merchants Association. March 25, 1983, Olan died leaving behind many good memories his family can share. Elizabeth Westfall Daughtry, daughter of Tobe and Myrtle Westfall came to Dickens County from far off Kent County at the age of a few days in 1930. Red Hill Community was home. School days were spent in Spur schools. In 1947 I graduated and began working at C&W Electric as bookkeeper. Then to City Cleaners and in February 1952 I went to work at West Texas Utilities until September 1958; then until January 1981 I worked at Western Auto. In 1981 I began my present job, Chief Deputy Tax Assessor-Collector, Dickens County.

I teach an adult Sunday school class at First Baptist Church of which we are members. On January 9, 1950 Linda Joyce joined our family. Then on October 8, 1958 Robert Glen was born. Linda graduated from Spur High school in 1968. After attending Texas Tech two years she took a business course. She married Tommy Reynolds May 22, 1971 and they lived in Waco. Now they are in Fort Worth where Tommy works for Standard Office Equipment and Linda works for Hilo Corporation. January 13, 1976 was a special day for us as our first grandchild, Jennifer Michele was born. Needless to say, she is special. Robert started first grade to Mrs. Ann Blumberg, also my first grade teacher. Graduating in 1977, he attended Lubbock Christian College where he met Debbie Hall. Married August 5, 1978, they made their home in Spur and Debbie teaches first grade. They gave us two special grandsons, Toby Dean and Robert Andrew.

As you can see, God has been good to us. Not a lot of material things but a lot of love. Love of God, of family, and of friends. All these things we found in Dickens County.
