Pvt. W. C. Messer Dies In Philippines of Battle Wounds
Pvt. Walter C. Messer who was born and raised in Dickens County, died June 15 in the Philippines of wounds incurred on Manadano Island, the War Dept. has notified his wife, the former Marie Ball of Spur.Private Messer entered the service Dec. 13, 1944 and took his basic infantry training at Camp Roberts, A. On May 9, 1945 he left Fort Ord, CA for overseas duty.
Before being inducted into the service, Private Messer worked as an airplane mechanic at the San Bernardino air service command field.
He is survived by his widow, and two children; Weldon and Darlene, of Spur; his mother, Mrs. W. C. Messer, Redlands, CA; five sisters: Myrtle Gentry, Redlands; Cora Jones Big Bear Lake, CA; Lillian Webb, Richmond, CA; Flora Lee Weems, TX; Dora Bedwell, OK; and one brother, Herman Messer, Espuela.
