George Robert Wilson, a lifelong resident of Ralls, Texas and a beloved member of the community, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004. Mr. Wilson will be remembered by generations of boys as the dedicated, inspired and inspiring Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 333. Devoting years of commitment to community organizations and institutions he believed in was a hallmark of Mr. Wilson's life. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Ralls Fire Department for 20 years. He also served as a Director of the Ralls Chamber of Commerce as the Parade Chairman of the Lions Club, as a member of the Crosby County Fair Board and as a Director of the Ralls Cemetery Board. Additionally Mr. Wilson was a deacon at Ralls First Baptist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason. His dedication to his hometown was recognized as Ralls Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year. He was also honored as "One Who Makes a Difference" by KCBD-TV.
Completing his devotion to making a positive difference for the community's youth and its future, Mr. Wilson also had a keen appreciation of Ralls history. He was Director of the Ralls Historical Museum and shortly before his death, he and his wife moved into the town's oldest home. Recently, he completed the task of preserving a piece of his personal history: He lovingly and painstakingly restored the 1929 Model A pick-up that he'd bought for $35.00 in 1957 as an enterprising teenager to haul the equipment he needed to mow area lawns. Mr. Wilson was born in Portales, New Mexico on April 1, 1941. He graduated from Ralls High School in 1960 and subsequently attended South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. On May 25, 1962 he married Carolyn Jeanette Wheeler in Ralls. He landed a job at Pioneer Natural Gas Com. (now Atmos Corp.) for whom he worked for 39 years. George was a man who loved life, loved his friends and his community, always gave of himself and "never met a stranger" his family said. He is preceded in death by his father Robert A. "Bob" Wilson and his mother Helen Lucille Wilson. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette and his son Rob, his sister Anna Louise Humphreys, her husband Carl and their son Don Humphreys and his wife Lynn.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, November 12, 2004 at the Ralls First Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Carson and Rev. Ken Bevel officiating. Burial will follow in the Ralls Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls. The family suggests memorials to the Ralls Boy Scout Troop 333 Jamboree Fund, Ralls Historical Museum or the Ralls First Baptist Church Kitchen Fund.
