Funeral services for Ila Mae Bradford Wheeler (Mrs. Porter F. Wheeler) will be at 3:00 p.m., Monday, September 20, 2010 at the Emma Church of Christ in Ralls, TX with W. Alex Fagen, grandson-in-law, officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Monday at the church. Interment will follow at the Ralls Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls.

Mrs. Wheeler died Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at age 95 in Villa St. Joseph Nursing Home in Overland Park, KS where she had moved in 2004 from Lubbock, TX to be near her daughter, Linda Stem. She was born February 15, 1915, the third of the six children of David Clarence and Lola Ann Pippen Bradford, in Cooke County, TX near Gainesville.

Before her first birthday, the family moved to a homestead in De Baca County, NM near Ricardo. The family moved to Crosby County, TX near Ralls in January 1920. Mrs. Wheeler attended Ralls public schools and graduated as valedictorian of the Ralls High School class of 1933. On December 10, 1936 she married Porter Floyd Wheeler of Ralls, with whom she shared life for 63 years. Mr. Wheeler died in December 1999.

Mrs. Wheeler's first love was her family and home. She also had a strong commitment to her church. She was known in the family and community for her outstanding skills in wonderful "home cooking." She was a person of great compassion with a strong servant ethic. She prepared many meals for the sick and unfortunate in the community. In 1990 the Ralls Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture honored her as their "Citizen Through the Years."

She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly and they loved her with a passion - especially when they were young and could come and stay with Grandma and Grandpa for periods of time. She provided them many days of wonderful memories.

Mrs. Wheeler is survived by daughter, Linda Wheeler Stem (Carl H. Stem) of Overland Park, KS; daughter, LaWanda Wheeler Neel (Gerald G. Neel) of Lakewood, CO; and son, David Max Wheeler (Suzanne Welch Wheeler) of Deer Park, TX; 10 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her one sister and four brothers.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful people of Odyssey Hospice in Kansas City and the staff, nurses and aides at Villa St. Joseph in Overland Park for their loving, dedicated care of Mrs. Wheeler in her final days.

For those who wish to make memorial gifts, the family suggests gifts to the Children's Home of Lubbock, P.O. Box 2824, Lubbock, TX 79408.
