WINTER PARK, Fla. (Special) - Services for W.D. "Windy" Watkins, 73, of Winter Park. Fla., one of the first students to be accepted at Texas Technological College when it opened in 1925 and a former Tech board of directors chairman, were conducted in Winter Park Tuesday.After cremation, Watkins' ashes will be buried in Ralls Cemetery.
He died Sunday in his Florida home after a long illness.
Watkins was appointed to the Tech board of directors in 1953 and became the first Tech ex-student to serve as chairman of the board.
Watkins was a native of Granbury and moved to Ralls in 1919.
He married Lucille Moxley in 1930. He lived in Lubbock for 10 years and was employed by Lubbock Cotton Oil Co. He also lived in Plainview, Littlefield and Abilene while employed by Anderson Clayton and Co.
Until his retirement in 1972, Watkins was vice president of Anderson Clayton and Co. industrial division in Phoenix. He moved from Scottsdale, Ariz., to Winter Park in 1977.
Watkins served as president of the Texas Cotton Seed Crushers Association from 1958 to 1959.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. William Grasty of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; a brother, Walker of Ralls and four grandchildren.
