Final Rites Held for C.H. Verett, Killed in Action in Korean War

U.S.Flag Funeral services for Sgt. C.H. Verett, 20, were held in Ralls school auditorium at 3 p.m., Wednesday. Rex Kimbrough, minister of Ralls Church of Christ, and uncle of C.H., officiated, assisted by Rev. J.S. Abernethy and Chaplain James R. Rankin of American Post 255.

"Be With Me Lord", "Crossing the Bar", "There Is a Place of Refuge" and "We Are Going Down the Valley" were sung by the choir. Rankin read parts of a letter from C.H. to his parents, also a letter from a buddy, Jim Weiry, in the same company and with him at the time of his death.

Clarence Henry Verett, jr., was born near Cone, Jan. 10, 1932. He was an athlete in Ralls high school, playing halfback on the Jackrabbit football team. C.H. graduated from high school in May, 1950, and attended Texas Tech. He enlisted in the Marines Oct. 9, 1950. After boot training at San Diego, he had his basic training at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside Calif., and Barstow, Calif., before going overseas in November, 1951. He served in Korea and was in combat until Aug. 13, 1952, when he was killed by shrapnel in the battle for Bunker Hill.

Sgt. George Sullivan, a Marine from Montana, escorted the body from Oakland, Calif., to Ralls and remained for funeral services. Marr-Carter Funeral home amburlance met the body in Lubbock on Tuesday night.

Ralls high school and all business houses were closed for the funeral. The flag on the school campus and in Ralls cemetery were flown at half-mast. Reese AFB of Lubbock had charge of military rites at the cemetery. He was buried in Ralls cemetery beside the grave of his mother, the former Zela Mae Kimbrough, who died in March, 1934.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Verett, sr., of Ralls; one brohter, Harold Verett; and two half-brothers, Eddie and Elvin, all of Ralls; a paternal grandmother, Mrs. Maggie Verett, Ralls.

Pallbearers were former schoolmates: J.B. Morrison, Boyce Bryan, Max Preston, Cecil Richardson, Marvin Tomme, Franklin Dunlap, Jim Noble and Bob Kimbrough.
