Obituary

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon in Ralls for Mrs. R.L. Travis, beloved pioneer citizen of Crosby County. She had been a resident of this county for thirty-four years, and had resided in Ralls for the past twenty-four years.

A devoted Christian mother, Mrs. Travis had been a member of the Church of Christ for 45 years, and attended services here regularly until her health made it impossible. She was born in Holland, Bell County, Texas, and came to Crosby County with her husband to Emma where they lived about ten years before moving to Ralls.

Rites were held at the Ralls Church of Christ with Chas. W. Watkins, John R. Freeman and H. Hall in charge of the services. Burial was made in the Ralls cemetery with Marr Funeral Home directing.

Surviving besides the husband and two sons, Clyde R. Travis of Ralls, and R.L. Travis, Jr., of Clovis, New Mexico, four daughters, Mrs. Oma Lee Benton, Holly, Colorado, Bettye Travis of Ralls, Mrs. Connie J. Johnson, Denver, Colorado, and Mrs. Juanita Tyer, Ralls,; one brother, Wylie Reed of Holland, Texas, three sisters, Mrs. J.M. McKnight, Roswell, New Mexico, Mrs. Mattie Lindsey, of Woodlake, Texas, Mrs. E.B. Bridges, San Angelo, Texas.

Active pallbearers were Bill Dunn, J. Edd McLaughlin, R.L. Bowman, Dr. W.L. Botkin, L.D. Moore, and Dave Benton.

Rufus L. (Big) Travis, resident of Crosby county since 1905, died at his home here at 2:40 a.m., Wednesday, of acute pneumonia. Mr. Travis felt fine Tuesday and was in town in the afternoon.

Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Arthur B. Watkins, Church of Christ minister in Lubbock, in charge.

Survivors include two sons, Clyde R. of Ralls and R.L. Jr., of Clovis, N.M.; four daughters, Miss Bettye Travis, Odessa; Mrs. Claude Benton, Ralls; Mrs. Charlie Tyer, Ralls; and Mrs. W. Ray Johnson, Floydada; a sister, Mrs. W.R. Richards, Ropesville; one granddaughter, Bette Jo Tyer; five grandsons, Jim Scott Travis, Travis Earl and Carl Tyer, David Logan Travis and Conray Johnson.

His wife, Mrs. Ida Travis, died March 15, 1940. His eldest son, Carl, passed away in 1907.

Travis was a farmer and real estate dealer in this section for the past 43 years. He served 10 years as county commissioner, and assisted the late John R. Ralls in laying out the original townsite of Ralls.

He was for several years president of the West Texas Old Settlers, which met annually in Hank Smith Park. At the time of his passing he was president of the Old Emma Pioneers, who meet each year on May 30. He was also president of the Crosby County Sing-Song many years.

Pallbearers were: Jessie Hall, Robert Hall, Larry Morton, Hugh Ash, J.D. Ash and Boe Diggs.

Interment was in Ralls cemetery with Marr funeral home in charge.
