She was born August 20, 1912 in Childress to the late Joseph Bradford and Mary Jeretha (Damron) Patton. Joseph and Mary brought their eight young children to the small community of League Four in 1919 when Vera was six years old. They moved from a small community called Garden Valley near Childress. League Four was located 12 miles southwest of Ralls. The Patton's were among those who bought the land and helped build the school. Vera attended League Four School and then went to Ralls High School where she graduated in 1931. She played on the basketball team and was coached by Clara Parish.

Clarence and Vera were a very productive young couple working a dairy and farming and raising their family. A homemaker and devout christian, Vera was a member of the Ralls First United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school and Bible teacher and a member of the choir. She was very active in the community where she was a member of the Senior Citizens and past Joy Club member. Vera enjoyed people, delighted in her grandchildren, traveled the world, and loved Ralls where she had lived for 71 years.

Vera is preceded in death by four brothers; Lester, Alvie, Cecil and Lloyd Patton and by three sisters, Bertha Starch, Floyd Clark ad Lola Thornton and by a grandson, Stephen Clay Starch who passed away in 1997.

She is survived by a son, Wayne Starch of Lubbock, two daughters and their husbands; Jauana and Ben Colburn of Levelland and Carolyn and Gary Jordan of Ralls; by six grandchildren; Kevin and Tracey Colburn, Teresa and Joe Hinson, Kimberly and Pleasant Brooks, Nathan and Mindy Jordan, Dr. David and Kathy Starch and Jennifer and Syril Mathai, and 15 great grandchildren.
