Biography

In 1906 J.D.Smith came to Crosby County from Haskell County and bought land from Dr. Carter in the Fairview neighborhood. Mr. Smith had a family of fifteen children and all lived to be more than twenty-one years of age. The Smiths have made good citizens of the county as farmers, ginners and county officials.

Ernest married Bessie Collier; Calvin, his twin brother, married Jessie Collier. Ernest was tax assessor for eight years and commissioner for eight more. Bill Smith is a ginner at Ralls, and is well respected; Dick runs the gin at McCoy in Floyd County; Ray is in Albuquerque and Lige in Dallas. Beecher, Clifford, John D. and Spurgeon are all dead. The girls are Mrs. Ellen Cochran of Hereford; Mrs. Jim Richards, wife of a Baptist preacher, who preached his first sermon at Estacado; Misses Wildren and Juanita of Lubbock and Ralls. The youngest son, Vernie, who married Hazel Henry, lives on the old place of J.D. Smith.

Mrs. Smith lives in Ralls, one of the most beloved women by her family and friends. She has given her life to good, kind deeds.

Obituary

RALLS (Special) - Services for Mattie Lee Smith, 95, of Ralls are scheduled for 3 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church here with the Rev. Floyd Haddock, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Larry Stallings, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Mangum, OK.

Burial will follow in Ralls Cemetery under the direction of Carter Funeral Home of Ralls.

Mrs. Smith died at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in West Texas Hospital in Lubbock.

A native of Bell County, Mrs. Smith moved to the Ralls area in 1906. She was a charter member of the First Baptist Church here.

Survivors include four sons, Ray of Santa Fe, NM, Lige of Corning, CA, Dick of Dallas and Vernie of Ralls; two daughters, Mrs. Wildering West of Lubbock and Juanita of Ralls; a stepdaughter, Mrs. J.H. Richards of Arlington; a brother, W.F. Roberts of Temple; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Stewart of Temple; 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
